International Day of Mother Earth: implications and responsabilities
Catalunya22 abril 2021
As we did last year, today we want to reclaim the Internation Day of Mother Earth (officially adopted by the UN on April 22, 2009) in response to the widespread tendency to omit ‘mother’ and designate it as Earth Day.
Present in most primordial (indigenous peoples) worldviews, the concept of Mother Earth has also been present in the history of Western philosophy and arts. Today we need this concept more than ever, perhaps, because it helps us open the door to the recognition of her intrinsic values (and eventually her rights) as well as our filial duties to her integrity and health, on which our health depends on.
For this reason, the Silene Association has once again launched a campaign aimed at conservationists and environmentalists in the Catalan cultural field, to demand the restitution of the name of Mother Earth on April 22, as a gesture full of symbolism, to begin to apply the profound implications that derive from it, which the crisis we live in justifies even more.
