Los Angeles, California, USA1 October 2025
Jane Goodall passed away on October 1, at the age of 91, while sleeping in Los Angeles, California, during a speaking tour in the United States. Her long career as a primatologist and anthropologist not only helped us better understand and appreciate chimpanzees and other primate species, but also humanity and the Earth we all share. She inspired curiosity, hope, and compassion in countless people around the world, and fostered a more loving and respectful view of the natural world, especially among young people, in whom she instilled feelings of peace and altruism and gave hope for the future. The Jane Goodall Global Institute and the international youth humanitarian and environmental program (JGI Roots & Shoots) extended to 75 countries around the world are part of her legacy.
