The great pilgrimage of Ajvatoica, Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Ajvatovica, Bosnia-HerzegovinaJune 2025
For more than five centuries, the most popular Muslim pilgrimage in Europe takes place every year at the end of June on the Ajvatovica plateau, in central Bosnia-Herzegovina. Two weeks of cultural and religious activities culminate in a two-day pilgrimage to the sacred sites of this remote mountainous region, where the dervish Ajvaz-Dedo (Grandfather Ajvaz), to whom numerous miracles are attributed, retired in 1436. During the pilgrimage, a crowd of thousands of faithful perform all the rites in the middle of nature, in an alpine forest landscape of great beauty, highlighting the primordial character that Islamic tradition claims to restore.
