Indigenous Peoples’ Kyoto Water Declaration

2003

Statement made by representatives of indigenous peoples from around the world on the following topics: the relationship between their communities and water and Mother Earth; increasingly polluted, scarce and abused water supplies; the right of indigenous peoples to self-determination of their natural resources and their traditional knowledge that is based on natural and spiritual laws guaranteeing the sustainable use of resources; the obligation of governments, companies and intergovernmental organizations to consult and act only with the prior, free and informed consent of indigenous peoples; and how to approach an action plan to be carried out by indigenous peoples, governments and other organizations.
