Anam Cara: Spiritual Wisdom from the Celtic World

O’Donohue, John1999

Over six chapters, each consisting of several short sections, of deep and enjoyable reading, the author describes the mystery of the deep friendship. In Celtic, literally a ‘friendly soul’ (Anam Cara), and how it can be present throughout life, including death. With reference to nature and the senses, Celtic spirituality and Christianity, and numerous relevant citations to sacred texts, poems, legends or personal memories, the text explores universal themes of loneliness, love and death, from premises like ‘love is a reunion with the past’; ‘light is generous’; ‘silence is brother of divinity’ or ‘death as an invitation to freedom’. In the words of the author, Anam Cara is an old trip though the almost forgotten path of wisdom about what it means to be human.
