Defenders of the Sinjajevina pastoral communities victory, Montenegro
Sinjajavina, Montenegro10 July 2025
The peaceful and persistent resistance against the military threat that loomed over the Sinjajevina plateaus (the largest mountain pastoral territory in the Balkans, managed for centuries according to customary rules) has borne fruit. On July 10, the Prime Minister of Montenegro, Milojko Spajić, declared that, as promised, the government had taken the decision to cancel the initiative to establish a military training camp (taken by the previous government in 2019) listening to the voice of the citizens and thinking about future generations. The persistent struggle of the pastoral communities, local residents, conservation organizations and international organizations has made it possible to stop this new NATO initiative, which would have further militarized this region, destroying natural, social and spiritual values unique to the Balkan peninsula.
