Valores de la educación tradicional mapuche: posibles contribuciones al sistema educativo chileno

The objective of this doctoral thesis is to rescue and understand the main cultural values and educational procedures of the Mapuche educational system. The field work was carried out in the municipalities of Chol-Chol, Ercilla, Imperial, Lautaro Victoria and Lumaco in Chile. Two groups participated: A group of wise Mapuche elders and a group of professionals and technicians who live between two worlds: the Mapuche and the non-Mapuche. The research was qualitative, with a phenomenological approach, and was carried out through personal interviews and discussion groups. The aspiration of the elders is to achieve wisdom, understood as the balance that a person is capable of achieving with lived experience, with the incorporated norms that are established as a people, history and the wisdom received from the ancestors, added to the reflections, with sufficient capacity to understand and act among people of all groups and achieve their trust, generating the principle of reciprocity, which leads them to a respectful coexistence with all other beings, respect for the diversity of nature, and coexistence with spirits and Divinity.
